Thursday update -- Handing over the keys!!!! -- Actualización del jueves: ¡¡¡Entrega de llaves!!!!


7am: Breakfast

8 am: depart for work site

8:30 am: arrive

12:30 pm: depart for church/school for lunch

1:45 pm: go back to the work site

4 pm: Key handover

4:45 pm: trip to the mall -- we got ice cream and Pizza

5:30 pm: arrived back to the Missions House and had our pizza

6:15 pm: unloaded bus -- 6 wheelbarrows, 2 step ladders, 4 pick axes, 6 spade shovels, 2 post hole diggers, 2 steel spikes, 2 tampers. 1 very long piece of 6" PVC pipe -- possibly 20 ft long.

7 pm: showers and relaxation time

6:15 am tomorrow morning -- depart for the airport for a full day of travel -- 11:59 pm arrival at DTW. We are transitting through Miami.


The majority of the student time today was spent painting -- exterior paint finished (JLAB Blue!). The interior was also painted JLAB Blue -- but time was running out. We did our best -- everyone was working so hard with the painting. The paint was strangely thinner compared to the paint in the states. But we made it work as best we could.

Axel and I were tasked with repairing the bed frame. Local counterpart, Johnjer, helped by cutting support bars and extra rails for her bed. We were able to save money by reusing the bed -- we bought her a set of storage drawers for clothing with the extra money we saved.

Doors and window shutters were hung (Thanks, CJ and Semaje). I was in charge of painting them gray -- a great compliment to the JLAB Blue.

One fantastic thing that happened today occurred when CJ cut the opening for the window. This created a square piece of cement board. We called on our student artist Journee -- she took the cement board and transformed it into a fantastic portrait of our home owner. In a short period time, Journee created an impressive piece of art that is hung in the new house.

The key handover/presentation was supposed to happen around 3 pm. We rushed to get everything done as best we could. The family was very appreciative of everything -- and they will finish any paint job that we didn't get to finish.

We went to the mall for a quick trip -- got ice creams and other small trinkets. Mr. Bill rewarded us with Little Caesar's pizza and soda for such a job well done. He has taken over 100 trips with mission builds and had all positive comments about our work.

I took a final video walk through of the house -- probably won't be able to post it until we return home since the wifi here isn't as strong as it is in the US.

The rest of the evening was spent visiting in the dining hall area, packing our bags, and catching up with family.

6:15 pm: Descargamos el autobús: 6 carretillas, 2 escaleras de mano, 4 picos, 6 palas de mano, 2 excavadoras de hoyos, 2 estacas de acero y 2 apisonadoras. Un trozo muy largo de tubo de PVC de 15 cm, posiblemente de 6 metros.

19:00: Duchas y tiempo de relax.

Mañana a las 6:15: Salida hacia el aeropuerto para un día completo de viaje. Llegada a las 23:59: Llegada a DTW. Estaremos en tránsito por Miami.

Hoy, los estudiantes dedicamos la mayor parte del tiempo a pintar. La pintura exterior ya está terminada (¡azul JLAB!). El interior también se pintó de azul JLAB, pero el tiempo se agotaba. Hicimos lo mejor que pudimos; todos estaban trabajando arduamente. La pintura era extrañamente más líquida en comparación con la de Estados Unidos. Pero lo hicimos lo mejor que pudimos.

A Axel y a mí nos encargaron reparar el marco de la cama. Su colega local, Johnjer, ayudó cortando barras de soporte y barandillas adicionales para su cama. Logramos ahorrar dinero reutilizando la cama; con el dinero extra que ahorramos, le compramos un juego de cajones para guardar ropa.

Se instalaron las puertas y las contraventanas (Gracias, CJ y Semaje). Yo me encargué de pintarlas de gris, un gran cumplido para... El JLAB Blue.

Hoy ocurrió algo fantástico cuando CJ cortó la abertura para la ventana. Esto creó un trozo cuadrado de placa de cemento. Llamamos a nuestra estudiante de arte, Journee, quien tomó la placa de cemento y la transformó en un fantástico retrato de la dueña de casa. En poco tiempo, Journee creó una impresionante obra de arte que está colgada en la nueva casa.

La entrega de llaves/presentación estaba prevista para las 3 p. m. Nos apresuramos para terminar todo lo mejor posible. La familia estuvo muy agradecida por todo y terminarán cualquier trabajo de pintura que no hayamos podido terminar.

Fuimos al centro comercial a dar un paseo rápido; compramos helados y otras pequeñas chucherías. El Sr. Bill nos recompensó con pizza y refresco de Little Caesar's por un trabajo tan bien hecho. Ha hecho más de 100 viajes con construcciones de misiones y todos han tenido comentarios positivos sobre nuestro trabajo.

Hice un último recorrido en video por la casa; probablemente no pueda publicarlo hasta que regresemos a casa, ya que el wifi aquí no es tan fuerte como... Está en Estados Unidos.

El resto de la tarde la pasamos charlando en el comedor, haciendo las maletas y poniéndonos al día con la familia.

    Proud mom of an artist here! This is experience was so much more than I could have hoped for all of the children. I can't wait to see these accomplished faces and hear all their wonderful stories. They did a beautiful thing. God bless ya'll!

After lunch, we boarded a yellow school bus to drive to the work site. When we got there, we started digging the trenches -- workers were already there. They were breaking apart the 12-inch deep trench. The 40-inch holes were already dug -- nine total. This post focus is going to be on the cement mixing.... Axel and Kamryn were especially helpful in mixing cement. They were the sole mixers of cement. Here's the recipe -- as described to me by our master mixers: All of these items are lifted up to shoulder height and added to the mixer -- which is SUPER LOUD. First: one bucket and a half of water. Five gallon buckets. The water is gathered by hand from a "river" and carried back to the work site about 1/4 mile each way.  Next: Cement bag -- 46.5 kg -- 102 pounds -- into the mixer 1 five-gallon bucket of gravel/sand. Tuesday update -- Actualización del martes

Tuesday February 17 – at the work site all day – lunch break at the school/church   7 am: Breakfast 8:15 am: school bus ride to the site 8:45 am: arrive to the site 11:30-1 pm: lunch at the school -- see pictures of basketball and visiting with younger students. 1:30-5:45 pm: Finish at the worksite   Today’s main goal was to get all of the concrete done/poured – especially since we had the delay from yesterday (concrete machine breakdown – Mr. Lipman said “it’s got some faulty O-rings for the carburetor and this is causing oil to leak into the gas before it goes into the piston. All they need is some starter fluid.” The man was right, but humble, so the starter fluid took a while to appear and the delay set us slightly behind schedule for the start of this morning). All Aboard!!! Todos a bordo !!!

​Happy to report that we are sitting in the plane at Miami waiting to depart for Honduras. Luckily, the group of young men were able to be rebooked and are flying with us. Previously, they had flights for a 10:30 AM departure out of Miami.  The reason these flights were originally booked separately is due to the limitations…..we could only book 6 tickets at a time. Young men were booked first (ticketed with Mr. Lipman), young women were booked a couple days later (ticketed with me). Surprised to find out a couple days later that the original flight that the young men were on was $800 more per person for the girls!!! So, in the interest of saving some money, girls and boys were booked separately. Girls scheduled at 12:58 pm.  However, the fog in Miami delayed the young men so here we all are together aboard one flight.
