Presentation by our Partner, Pastor Giovanni (he’s a physician by training) – through a translator – these are his words, my notes. All my questions (and his answers) are at the end.

There are three branches/goals of the church

 

1. Share God’s message

2. Believers to become disciples

3. Show God’s love to the community – through service

 

Family lives in extreme poverty. Income between $1-3/day. Current homes are built with scrap materials found in the streets – cobbled together

 

The church has adopted a community and built for them. The church is trying to help develop the community

 

35 homes built so far in the neighborhood where we will work this trip. Last year’s trip was in a different neighborhood.

 

In the neighborhood, the church has helped by coordinating:

Core group of neighbors within the community as contact points for new neighbors

Medical teams to visit the families

“Walked with many of them for years”

The church continues to “walk with the families” to support

Clinic: 400 patients in one day

Optometrist – found a man who were suffering from cataracts – vision completely blocked – but the man didn’t even have the bus fare for travel to the surgery. The church got him to the hospital for the surgery. Four days later, after the surgery, he came back to the surgery and he was able to see. Usually the surgery happens one eye at a time. The church’s outreach team supports community members for the long term, not just for one time.

 

The value of the house for the family cannot easily be measured – provides dignity, self-worth, peace of mind, and confidence. The church believes that everyone deserves love. A house is the first step towards stability.

 

Then we watched a video for our new homeowner, Amparo. Her current house gets lots of water during the rain. She is epileptic and doesn’t always have money to pay for her medicine.

Yesterday was her birthday – dressed very nice – and she had a seizure after church. She recovered and then was sent home. Her biggest assignment right now (i.e., what he is looking forward to) is that she is going to have a house at the end of the week. Sometimes it’s hard for us to understand the impact when we decide to serve and provide some kindness. The video that we watched was very touching. Very meaningful.

 

The last team that came from JLAB built a house in a different community. We watched a video about her. This is a woman who is sick, she has lost one of her eyes. Has arthritis, has cancer.  During the rainy season in the current home, the leaks are everywhere. We watched a video about a house constructed in the past.

When did they start adopting families?

Over 20 years. 2008

 

How many homes have you built over the 18+ years?

 

Where does the church get their funding?

Mission trips – local church identifies family, makes sure there is land, establishes relationship with the family.  They present to the mission group and then they choose yes or no to build the house.  As a local church, members will sometimes donate items to the family.

 

Cost of the house – with a good tin roof, concrete floor 370 square feet $5700.

 

How are families identified?

Since they have been working with the community for so many years – everyone has needs – there are some who have bigger needs than others. So there is a list waiting list so when we receive the help, they know where they can build and how they can help. The one requirement is that they own the land. That way they make sure they own the land they live on.

 

How much does the land cost?

Plot of land could be $4-5000 but the majority of them receive donated land from the city hall.

 

Are there any taxes to pay – no

 

Will the electric bill be a burden for her?

The government subsidize for people less than 150 KWhr – so they would get the electricity for free. New government – so the church hopes the subsidy will continue. The church has established a good relationship with the previous mayor. The new major – we don’t know
