Mixing Cement -- not an easy task ---- Mezclar cemento no es una tarea fácil

After lunch, we boarded a yellow school bus to drive to the work site.

When we got there, we started digging the trenches -- workers were already there. They were breaking apart the 12-inch deep trench. The 40-inch holes were already dug -- nine total.

This post focus is going to be on the cement mixing....

Axel and Kamryn were especially helpful in mixing cement. They were the sole mixers of cement.

Here's the recipe -- as described to me by our master mixers:

All of these items are lifted up to shoulder height and added to the mixer -- which is SUPER LOUD.

First: one bucket and a half of water. Five gallon buckets. The water is gathered by hand from a "river" and carried back to the work site about 1/4 mile each way.

Next: Cement bag -- 46.5 kg -- 102 pounds -- into the mixer

1 five-gallon bucket of gravel/sand.

Let it mix for a couple seconds in the loud mixer.

Then, 4 buckets of gravel and 4 buckets of sand. All lifted to shoulder height and dumped in.

That amount of cement would fill up 4 wheel barrows.

They made at least 6 loads of cement. That's 600 pounds of cement powder, 320 pounds in buckets of water (each weighing 40 pounds), 2160 pounds of sand or gravel -- that totals 3080 pounds. To put that into perspective -- that's the same weight of my little beep beep car.....

and we're not even done yet....

=======

Y aún no hemos terminado...
